The Journey of Resilience & Innovation
Lalit Khatri, born in 1979, is a Commerce Graduate and Fashion Designer. His family has been in the clothing business since 1980 in the category of Indian Wedding and Ethnic Wear. He has expertise in designing, creating and manufacturing wedding attires from budgeted ranges to high-end fashion, and is known for wedding lehengas and sarees with silver zari, zarodzy and sequins. In May 2004, he started Bharatplaza.com with just ₹75,000 PMRY loan, a credit card of ₹37,000 and a computer gifted by his father-in-law. In the very first year, sales reached ₹6 lakhs by March 2005, and by 2015 the company touched a turnover of ₹15 crore. Starting from home, he built a 7-floor building in a prime location of Jodhpur in 2011. But due to the decision of creating two online stores, Bharatplaza.com and Bharatplaza.in, Google banned and deranked Bharatplaza.com, and the turnover of ₹15 crore dropped to ₹90 lakhs in 2016. To repay loans, all property and assets had to be sold, and despite cleaning the website from penalties, recovery did not work.
In 2019, Lalit met with an accident that led to drowsiness, semi-coma and finally coma for 4–5 years. Doctors at AIIMS Jodhpur tried everything, and in April 2024 performed a brain surgery — cranioplasty with 1/3 artificial skull implant. After 6 hours of surgery, a miracle happened when Lalit regained life and activity despite being in coma for years. One more brain surgery was pending, which was done in March 2025, and finally his health became stable. In June 2025, AIIMS doctors gave a green signal of 95% brain fitness, though he was already working 12–14 hours daily online between the two surgeries.
During this time, Lalit gained strong command over Artificial Intelligence and became an expert Prompt Engineer. He realized how his e-commerce ethnic wear business, earlier operated with 28 team members, could now be managed with just 15 teammates delivering 10x results using AI. With more than 3 lakh NRIs as clients from 38+ countries, Bharatplaza.com is now ready for its relaunch in October 2025 on the auspicious occasion of Diwali.
